                                              Our Community Health Department serves the society based on "Prevention is better than cure" with various activities for the past 25                                                    years. Guidance and freedom from the management, untiring effort and support from the department faculty, lead the way to extend our                                                infallible diligence to adopt villages in both Madurai and Sivagangai district with the expertise team of medical officers, social scientists, counsellors, paramedicals and dedicated faculty members. 
              We engender self interested and self motivated powerful student community with social commitment and zeal in volunteership to render essential awareness programme for the community in need.
             The strength of our department is to work together, serving as resource team, dispense services to schools, college, technical institutions, Government and non government organizations.
            The students were effectively trained to proffer audio-visual aids to render health awareness activities such as self explanatory health flexes, infographics, posters, documentaries, pamphlets, digital flash cards, photo folders, health aprons and booklets.
      Department Faculty are encouraged with research activities, attending conferences, and presenting scientific papers, trial projects and digital documentations.Digital archiving and periodical updating of programme's through social media (You tube, Blog, Facebook, Instagram) are the stand alone activities of our department.

The overall objectives of Community Health Nursing is to promote student’s knowledge on Concept of health, family and Community Health, epidemiology and influence of environmental factors in theoretical as well as in practical. The students are motivated to develop their competence in functioning an amazing works in the various health programs in the community Field.

OBJECTIVES
Community health programmes focuses three main objectives:-

  • The students are able to acquire indepth knowledge in community health nursing and apply the same in different settings.

  • To provide / render comprehensive services to the needy village people.

  • To conduct / carry out training and research programmes in co-operative with Government and voluntary agencies.


AREA OF OPERATION
 
           The selected villages (Kaitharinagar, Thanakkankulam, Pasumalai) comes under our community health programme in Madurai District, Tamil Nadu. The villages which are selected for this programme have an inadequate health care delivery system and lack of health awareness among the people.
            Another Rural community health project has been extended in CSI Hospital Kilanjunai which includes 20 villages around Ramnad district  based on the Leprosy Mission Hospital.

STUDENTS EXPERIENCE
            Every PG and UG students, as soon as they enter the college they are assigned to participate in the comprehensive community health and development camp for a duration of one week for an extensive and intensive orientation of rural community health programmes. 
            Community Health Department adopted Two Villages and running health centres where the students are posted and getting experience according to their prescribed requirements made by the university. They are posted in community health areas regularly and motivated to complete their requirements under a proper supervision.
            Apart from their regular community postings they often visit community health institutions regularly, like primary health centers, sub centers, Unani.  Homeopathy and sidda dispensaries, Block  development office, Government Hospital (district head quarters), voluntary organizations, visit municipal corporation health centers, family welfare bureau, District Head office, district Tuberclosis office, District Leprosy office, Integrated child development scheme, Tamil Nadu Integrated Nutritional programme. Water purification plant, Incinerator, dietary department and sewage disposal.
